Winner of the Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service, 1812 Outreach is a unique, in-school theatre education program for students at South Philadelphia High School and at the Widener Memorial School for Children with Disabilities.

The goal of 1812 Outreach is to offer students demonstrated methods for using the arts to enrich and further their academic, social, interpersonal and creative skills. Every week, students and instructors work together exploring their imaginations through improvisation, theater games and laughter. Through this interaction with 1812’s Actor/Educators, students learn to think creatively, gain confidence in the strength of their ideas and function effectively as a part of a team. Additionally, there is specific concentration on speaking with presence, and improving diction and eye contact. 1812 Outreach utilizes the power and effectiveness of laughter to engage the students in an active setting which is fun and different from anything else they do during a school day and also increases participation and helps them access their creativity in unexpected ways. These activities build important communication skills and confidence that can last a lifetime.
Now in its eleventh year of operation, 1812 Outreach continues to be an effective and important part of 1812’s seasonal activities and has enriched the lives of hundreds of students in Philadelphia.
